According to some reports, Apple is building a smaller version of the iPad to launch later this year, before the holiday season. The newest iPad will have a screen measuring between seven and eight inches — approximately 1.5 inches smaller than its previous versions. However, the smaller version will not feature the retina display introduced with the most recent iPad in March.
There have been rumors about ‘iPad mini’ in the market for some time now; however recent tablet launches by competitors, Microsoft and Google, makes it more real. At an event during mid-June Microsoft introduced its Surface tablet, which comes with a slick keyboard case, but so far no price or launch details have been provided. Last week, Google introduced the Nexus 7 tablet, which will run on Jelly Bean, the latest version of the Android operating system.
Analysts believe that launch of smaller iPad just in time for holiday season will be a blow for Microsoft and Google, and even for competitors like Amazon. However, only time will tell which tablet triumphs over all others.
